Welcome to 2012. After a horrifying 2011, I am ready for a fresh start. Of course I've resolved to "Make A Better Me" meaning weight, health, and generally work to make me into a better me. But not in to this...
In Philadelphia, we have a traditional parade every New Years day, older then the Rose Ball parade and frankly some what bizarre only comparable to carnivale in Brazil or Mardi Gras, except with fewer scandalously clad women, more blue collar workers, "wenches" and gold spray painted sneakers. Note the shoes the "wenches" are wearing....
The Mummers Day parade is an annual parade in Philadelaphia derived from when men, drunk from New Years Eve would wear women's clothing to celebrate. The tradition has become primarily men, dressed in excessively over glittered, colored outfit pouring hundred and thousands dollars into their costumes (many of whom in the early hours are still drunk). This parade in 6 hours long and consists of 4 parts, comics, fancies, string bands and fancy brigades.

My boyfriend refuses to watch it finding it garish and overly excessive. Not a native Philadelphian, he finds the whole thing somewhat strange. It probably is but you can't argue with tradition anymore then you would refuse to particapte in Mardi Gras or Carnivale if you lived there. Bring on those Gold Spray Painted Sneakers to Welcome 2012!
