Anyone who meet me after about mid 2009 may not know (based on my apperance) that I was once a huge gym rat. Not even kidding. I'd spend at least an hour and half through college on a treadmill, elipical ect. I enjoyed throughly. Needless to say, money, life and jobs kind ate what little time I had left. My New Years resolution "make a better me" is primarly about getting myself back into this kind of shape.
There's no way I gonna look like a redheaded Rachel McAdams or Amy Adams but I can at least be healthy. The problem with working out is motivation. Some people look great in tight gym clothes and take pride. That's not me...I wear frumpy tees and short or sweats. I do not want to look pretty. I'm all sweaty and gross.
I went for the first time tonight and was left feeling kind of unhappy about how out of shape I really am and how long it's going to take me to rebuild my body to what it once was. I was also amused how little has changed since I was college about the dynamic of a gym.
I joined a gym at a small college. It's a lot cheaper and a lot simpler for what I need, why pay for all the thrills especially when a month around here at a "trendy" gym including the YMCAs can run you upwards on $70. It's funny, I used to come here off and on in while in High School and it looks exactally the same (or almost) and continues to perpuate the sterotypical college gym.
Typical College Gym
1. Only Girls are on the elipical machine. Seriously. I found this to be true in college, when I worked out there post graduation and at another university.
2. Men and way to muscular men were the only one using the machines and didn't clean them. GTL much? Ewww?!
3. There was only one girl anywhere near the weights and was obviously an athlete at the college. You could see she was following her training sheet to the mark.
4. Of all the TVs one of them is always on Spainish league soccer, that shows very graphic infomercials for various medical products. I may be scarred.
I'm sure more things are to follow but it's always amusing to see the dynamics in various gyms but how stero-typical college gyms are. Wish me luck in my new endvour to become a healthy (all be it skinnier) me.
